Kāteao is a boutique consultancy firm specialising in Māori strategy, translation services and cultural capability, capacity & competency building. Kāteao is owned and operated by husband and wife team Max and Sandy Matenga. We are native speakers of Te Reo Māori and our background is predominately in the education sector.

OUR KŌRERO

Max and Sandy have 23 years’ experience collectively in Primary and Secondary Schools Education. Max is a moderator for New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and a panel member for the design of the Te Marautanga o Aotearoa achievement standards. Sandy is a member of New Zealand Educational Institute (NZEI) and the premier Kapa Haka team and two-time national champions, Whangara-Mai-Tawhiti.

OUR TOHU

‘Kāteao’ means to inspire the world - ‘kā’ means to ‘ignite ‘or ‘inspire’ and ‘te ao’ is the Māori translation for ‘the world’. Our brand also represents ‘Kate’ who is the name of our mum who passed away and we want to carry her in all our professional engagements. The ‘koru’ design represents a child in the womb of a mother who would give genuine ‘manaakitanga’ or care for everyone. This narrative informs our work approach and the nurturing environment we want to create for all those we work with.
